Looking for a Web Design Agency? (Updated 2026)

Finding a web design agency or freelance designer is a tough exercise… especially with so many web designers available in Australia.

With almost every agency offering “similar services”… what sets the BEST design agency apart from the rest?

We know when you are looking for a web design company, you’re going to be looking for an agency that is proficient in their delivery, will align to the design project that you have in mind… but, your also going to be looking for an agency that you can trust, have excellent communication with & know that they have your best interests at heart. So, we have taken the time to put together a list of some of Australia’s best web designers and leading web agencies based on some key metrics;

  • Project Costs
  • Expertise (Proficiency, Credentials & Awards)
  • Ability to Deliver (Deliverable Standard)
  • Team Ability (In-House vs Outsourced)
  • Reviews (Social Proof & Trust Signals)

Having assessed over 100+ development companies & web design firms across Australia, accessing web portfolios, some exceptional designs and some a little less than… Assessing web design deliverable standards, industry recognition & awards (both nationally or internationally) along with customer feedback being provided through reviews on platforms such as Clutch, Facebook and Google…

We have a list of what we consider to be the top 12 web design agencies in Australia… these display that they can back what they say and deliver a stunning website you set out to achieve.

The 12 Best Web Designers in Australia

  • Digital Nomads HQ
  • Luminary (Recently Added)
  • Humaan (Recently Added)
  • Butterfly (Recently Added)
  • Chromatix (Recently Added)
  • Emote
  • Startdigital
  • TEKO
  • Boylen
  • FivebyFive
  • Forte Marketing
  • Clickk

We consider that the “Best Web Design Company” in Australia should excel in several key areas;

Design & Development Standard: Agencies or freelancers should be able to showcase a diverse range of exceptional websites, showcasing custom designs and advanced front end development skills. A key part of this is the ability to be diverse and deliver across different industries and based on the business’s individual requirements and being able to adapt the design approach to accomodate for this.

Technical Proficiency: The ability to write in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript across content management systems such as (WordPress Themes etc.) advanced features and dynamic visual effects.

User Experience (UX): The ability to deliver a website that prioritises the user’s needs, easy navigation, clear calls to action, and engaging delivery of its content.

Responsive Website Design: I feel that I shouldn’t have to write this in 2026… but it’s still an area that separates many web design agencies.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO): The implementation of foundational best practices for SEO. Giving every website the best opportunity for ranking and improved site visibility.

Communication, Scope & Process: The ability to communicate effectively, scope projects without project creep (additional costs) and a seamless process throughout the project engagement.

Value for Money: Pricing that correlates to the deliverable standard.

Why don’t I say competitive or cheap web design costs? Websites should vary in price based on the deliverable standard that the agency can deliver to… A small business website can cost $5000 AUD or $20,000 AUD and neither is wrong – but the project delivery should correlate to the investment.

Support & Maintenance: Providing post-launch support to the clients. Ensuring websites remain secure and up-to-date, and continue to perform well.

By excelling across each of these segments (collectively) a web design company can establish itself as one of the best agencies in Australia.

Our final note: all pricing listed, reviews, project listings were obtained where listed – for full breakdowns for the listed agencies, please refer to their agency website or contact them directly.

Conclusion

And there you have it!

What we consider to be the leading web design agencies for your 2026 project, across Australia. These all based on reviews, awards, deliverables, cost and location in Australia.

If your business is looking for a web design agency or looking for a new agency to take over your website management and maintenance, take a look at the above agency’s see which one best aligns with you and your business goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re an Australian business it makes sense to hire an Australian web design agency. Having a team that understands the geolocation of your business, customers and how they will interact with your website along with providing insight into the Australia marketing space is all of value.

Along with this, when you choose to engage with agencies “not” in Australia you have to consider timezones, communication, exchange rate & deliverable standards.

Basic Website: A simple website with a few pages (1-3) displaying information about a business or service can cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 AUD.

Small Business Websites: A slightly more complex website 6-10 pages and a unique design tailored towards your business. Often dedicated service pages, team, about us, testimonial pages etc. can range from $5,000 to $15,000.

E-commerce Website: An online store with products, categories, payment gateways, stock management and other e-commerce features on platforms such as WooCommerce or Shopify generally range from $10,000 to $30,000 or more, depending on complexity.

Understanding an agency’s process if paramount in your discovery phase and prior to selecting your agency… Agencies should typically follow a web design flow such as;

  • Discovery Phase: Understanding your business, target audience, and goals.
  • Strategy: Develop a website strategy and sitemap.
  • Design: Creating wireframes and visual designs both low-fidelity and high-fidelity visual representations of the website.
  • Development: Building of the website in the chosen CMS (WordPress, Shopify etc.)
  • Testing and launch: Cross-device testing, forms, CTA’s and integration tests prior to launch.
  • Maintenance and support: Providing ongoing support and updates whether on an adhoc basis or a retainer solution.

Define your goals: What do you need and want to achieve?

Do your research: Have a look at competitors online – keep a list to bring into your meetings with agencies.

Make sure they offer the services you need: As we have listed above, not every web design agency provides the same solutions. Some work in e-commerce where as others choose to be service-based as a primary.

Ask for referrals: Know someone who has used a web design agency before? Get their recommendations and opinions!

Get a proposal and estimate on pricing: Once you have narrowed in on your options, contact and organise a time to meet each of the agencies. This will give you a better idea of what each agency will charge and the services they provide.

How To Create A Landing Page: 5 Step Guide https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/blog/how-to-create-a-landing-page/ Thu, 01 Jan 2026 04:55:15 +0000 https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/?p=9958

What is a Landing Page?

A landing page is a website page with a specific purpose — the objective of a landing page is to convert visitors into leads.

If you’re running paid media campaigns or marketing campaigns requiring a landing page, your landing page plays a crucial role in convincing visitors to convert.

Whether you’re aiming for more sales or leads, having high-quality landing pages is essential for optimising conversion rates and lowering conversion costs. In this article, we will explore the key elements of an optimised landing page for ads and provide you with valuable tips to create effective and relevant landing pages.

How to create a landing page?

Creating a landing page doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are some actionable, step-by-step instructions to help you create one.

Define your landing page goal & audience

Before you begin creating your landing page, it’s important to clarify your “why,” “who,” and “what.” Why are you creating this landing page? Who is your target audience for the landing page? What actions do you want your landing page visitors to take in order to help you achieve your goal?

Choose your landing page builder

After you define your goal for your landing page – your ready to jump to the next step in choosing the right landing page builder for the task at hand.

Landing page creation can be facilitated through different platforms, whether its your existing CMS (i.e WordPress, Wix, Squarespace) or you can look at levergaing a dedicated landing page builder such as; Unbounce, Lead pages or Hubspot.

These dedicated landing page building platforms will often come with pre-created landing page designs, reducing the requirement in having to engage with a professional designer to create the visual design for your page.

However, Builders such as Unbounce or Leadpages come at a cost… so if you are looking to keep the investment low… consider either Hubspots Free landing page builder or include it in your current website building platform.

Landing page design - Make it engaging!

A solid landing page needs to be engaging!

Make sure it matches your brand – This includes, colours, fonts, visuals (imagery) & potentially layout similarities.

One common mistake in landing page designs is overlooking the importance of high-quality imagery… Use product imagery or service imagery (depending on the product you are selling), team photos or business images & use video if you have available.

Use visuals to tell the story, pictures speak a thousand words, so try to include these where you can and it makes sense.

Messaging, Tone & Story

Potential customers respond to content that taps into emotion. Incorporate emotional words and phrases that resonate with your target audience.

For example, words like “imagine,” “discover,” or “transform” can help create an emotional connection.

Add your call-to-action (CTA)

Landing pages are tailored towards a goal… this goal is your CTA or call to action.

Whether this is a contact form, click to call, email or value proposition in a downloadable piece of content… make sure your CTA is visible and clear within your design and messaging to make sure your audience understands the next steps.

The Ultimate High-Converting Landing Page Checklist

A step-by-step guide to building pages that turn visitors into leads.

Creating a landing page is easy. Creating a landing page that converts requires strategy. Use this checklist before you launch your next campaign to ensure you haven’t missed any critical elements.

Phase 1: Strategy & Alignment

Before you design a single pixel, you must define the strategy.

  • Define ONE Specific Conversion Goal A landing page should never have competing goals. Decide on the single action you want the user to take.
    • Examples: “Download the eBook” OR “Book a Consultation.” Never both.

See Pipedrives example of this with “unlock full access for free”
Pipedrive Landing Page

  • Ensure “Message Match” The headline on your landing page must match the ad or email the visitor just clicked. If your ad says “50% Off Web Design,” your landing page headline must immediately confirm that offer.
    • Why: Disconnects here cause high bounce rates.
  • Define Your Target Audience Who is this specific page for? The copy and imagery should speak directly to one specific persona, not a general audience.

Phase 2: Above the Fold (The Hero Section)

This is the screen users see before scrolling. It must hook them instantly.

  • Benefit-Driven Main Headline Don’t just describe what you do; describe the result.
    • Bad: “We offer SEO services.”
    • Good: “Double Your Organic Traffic in 90 Days.”

Mailforge Example “Get Started with Cold Email Infrastructure in Minutes”
  •
Mailforge Headline Example

  • Supporting Sub-Headline Use this to clarify the “How.” If the headline is the hook, the sub-headline is the explanation. It should support the main promise and encourage them to read on.

  • High-Quality Hero Media Use a high-resolution image or video that shows your product in use or visualises the result of your service. Avoid generic stock photos of people shaking hands.

  • Primary Call-to-Action (CTA) Your main button must be visible without scrolling. Use action-oriented text.
    • Avoid: “Submit”
    • Use: “Get My Free Quote” or “Start My Trial”

You can see how Mailforge have done this in the previous example with there “get started” button being in first view.

Phase 3: Content & Persuasion

Now that you have their attention, you must build desire.

  • Focus on Benefits, Not Features Features are what your product has (e.g., “Titanium alloy frame”). Benefits are what your product does for the user (e.g., “Lightweight so you can run faster”).

  • Use Bullet Points for Skimmability Online readers scan; they don’t read. Break heavy paragraphs into punchy bullet points to highlight key takeaways.

  • The “How It Works” Section Remove the fear of the unknown. Show a simple 3-step process of what happens after they click the button.
    • Example: 1. Fill out the form. 2. We analyse your site. 3. You get a custom plan.

  • Address Pain Points Explicitly mention the problems your audience is facing to show empathy. Then, position your offer as the solution.

Phase 4: Trust & Authority

People buy from those they trust. Prove you are legitimate – Hubspot Landing page does this we’ll and ill use the examples below;

  • Real Customer Testimonials Include reviews from actual clients. If possible, include their full name and a photo to increase authenticity.

  • Trust Badges & Logos Display logos of well-known clients you’ve worked with, software you integrate with, or security badges (like “SSL Secure”).
Hubspot - Clients they work with

  • Risk Reversal (Guarantees) Lower the barrier to entry. Offer a money-back guarantee, a free trial, or explicit “No credit card required” text.
Free Demo & Free Tool example

Phase 5: Design & User Experience (UX)

Good design guides the eye toward the conversion.

  • Directional Cues Use visual cues (arrows, lines, or a person’s eye gaze in a photo) to point directly toward your Call to Action button.

  • Contrast for CTA Buttons Your button color should not blend in. It should be a contrasting color that stands out from the rest of the page (the “squint test”).

  • Mobile Responsiveness Check your page on a real mobile device. Ensure text is legible, buttons are large enough to tap with a thumb, and images stack correctly.

  • Remove Global Navigation Crucial: Remove the header menu (Home, About, Contact). You don’t want users clicking away to read your blog. The only way off the page should be the CTA or closing the tab.

Cost for a Brochure or Portfolio Website

These are generally suitable for small. Business owners and start ups, generally creative a website with 6-10 pages of content surrounding, services, about us pages, contact information and a general overview of the business.

Pricing on this can vary depending on the CMS being leveraged (wix, squarespace, WordPress etc).

Simple drag and drop builders such as squarespace or wix will cost less to develop as the development time required is substantially less time than in a WordPress or Webflow development.

Pricing for Brochure & Portfolio Websites

1- 3 Page Brochure Website in WordPress- $2997 to $5997

Website can often have several integrations requirements with larger business, these are commonly CRM integrations, connections with financial platforms and invoicing, booking systems etc.

All of these effects the cost of the development and time required in development.

Along with integrations, companies will look at ensuring their website is optimised from the foundation for SEO… ensuring that the website will capitalise in organic traffic and SERPs upon completion.

Let break down the costs of SMB websites and Large or Enterprise website costs;

Pricing for SMB websites & large Websites

10 – 15 Page Small Business Website in WordPress – $9997 to $14,997

15 – 25 Page Website in WordPress – $14,997 to $24,997+

Cost for an eCommerce Website

eCommerce Websites (WooCommerce & Shopify Websites) are generally higher than standard brochure and small business websites due to the complexities in the development and integrations.

There are additional components within an ecommerce website requiring attention such as;

  • Category pages
  • Product pages
  • Check out processes & payment gateways
  • Shipping integrations
  • Discount systems or coupons
  • Product review systems

All of which requires both setup and design to bring it in line with the visual design and style of the website. This being a time consuming process brings additional costs and fees to be reflected in the overall project.

Pricing for eCommerce websites

Small eCommerce Website in WooCommerce or Shopify – $8997 to $14,997

Large eCommerce Website in WooCommerce or Shopify – $19,997 to $39,997+

Pricing would vary depending on whether a template is being utilised within the design and development or whether a full custom design is being tailored for the business. Additional fees and costs can differ in this segment, with some web designers including coupon code setup and review management systems within the web design packages.

Custom Websites or Agency CMS (Bespoke design – 6-10 pages)

Custom websites is a broad segment for web design. Whether it’s a headless CMS being used or a custom website being developed within WordPress, this will effect the cost.

Custom websites or CMS’s that are tied to agencies can often be cheaper in their costs as they are often replicated websites from a freelancer or agencies theme database.

A key point to be across with custom development is the ongoing ability to work within the website and the potential ongoing requirement from the agency or freelancer that is responsible for the original development. In our agency we often see businesses come to us with a “custom” designed website that is essentially tied to the original agency responsible for the development.

Top 9 Wayback Machine Alternatives to Explore Website History https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/blog/top-wayback-machine-alternatives/ Mon, 17 Nov 2025 01:36:37 +0000 https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/?p=38340

Some of these changes are subtle; others are impossible to miss. But what happens when you need to look back? To revisit an older version of a website for research, nostalgia, record-keeping, or even a competitive analysis?

That’s where web archiving tools come in.

For most of us, the Wayback Machine has been the go-to digital time capsule. Since 2001, it’s been preserving snapshots of the internet and now holds more than 900 billion archived pages, making it one of the most expansive historical web databases ever created.

However, despite its legacy not everything is perfectly captured. Some snapshots are incomplete, certain elements don’t load correctly, and occasionally, the page you need just isn’t there at all.

So what then?

If you’re trying to retrace how a website used to look or gather proof of past content, sometimes you need a different kind of website time machine. Something faster, more accurate, more visual, or more feature-rich than the Wayback Machine can offer.

That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the best alternatives that can help you explore the web’s past, fill in the gaps, and find the information you’re looking for.

What Is Wayback Machine?

Developed by the nonprofit Internet Archive in San Francisco, The Wayback Machine is the internet’s largest digital archive – over 99 petabytes of data!

Brewster Kahle and Bruce Gilliat created the Wayback Machine with a bold mission: to give “universal access to all knowledge.” They wanted to preserve web pages that might otherwise disappear forever.

Using it is simple. Just type a website URL into the search bar, choose a date, and browse old versions of the site. You can explore everything from the Y2K buzz in 1999 to the earliest layouts of your favourite websites. It’s like stepping into a digital time machine.

Why You Might Need an Alternative

The Wayback Machine is powerful, but it isn’t perfect. There are a few reasons you might want to look for other options:

  • Interactive content struggles: Flash platforms, JavaScript forms, and progressive web apps often don’t archive properly.
  • Incomplete captures: Content outside of HTML, like embedded files, can lead to broken links or missing images.
  • Limited search capabilities: Site Search relies on descriptive words rather than actual page text, making it tricky to find specific content.
  • Irregular archiving: Many pages aren’t captured frequently, so the version you need may not exist.

Other constraints include:

  • No instant archiving on demand
  • No guarantees for legal or regulatory proof
  • Basic scheduling and alerts
  • Limited API and data export options

Features to Look for in an Alternative

Not all website time machines are created equal. When hunting for an alternative to the Wayback Machine, focus on the features that matter most for your needs:

  • Snapshot frequency: How often does it grab pages? The more frequent the captures, the fresher and more complete your records. Say goodbye to missing milestones.
  • Depth of archiving: Is it just the homepage, or does it snatch every linked page, image, and file? The deeper it goes, the more you can explore.
  • Ease of access: A clunky interface slows you down. Look for clean, intuitive tools that let you dive into history without headaches.
  • Instant vs. scheduled captures: Need snapshots on the fly or prefer automated, recurring captures? The right tool lets you do both.
  • Professional-grade features: If you’re in finance, healthcare, or research, compliance-ready archiving, automated alerts, and team collaboration can be game-changers.

The best alternative is one that fills in the gaps left by the Wayback Machine, giving you the features, accuracy, and flexibility your project demands.

Top Wayback Machine Alternatives To Try

If the Wayback Machine can’t capture exactly what you need, don’t worry. There are plenty of other tools designed to preserve web content, each with unique strengths. Here’s a rundown of the best options:

This collection of alternatives highlights a range of tools, from free, instant snapshot services to enterprise-grade compliance solutions, helping you choose the right tool based on your archiving, research, or monitoring needs.

This detailed piece covers everything from simple Shopify costs to advanced features in Australia.

You will learn about the monthly expenses your business can expect in 2025 & going into 2026.

The content breaks down each pricing tier and reveals hidden costs. You will get practical explanations that help you pick the right Shopify plan for your business goals and budget.

Understanding Shopify’s 2025 Pricing Structure

Let’s take a closer look at Shopify’s pricing structure for Australian businesses in 2025. Our analysis will help you understand your exact costs.

Complete breakdown of current plan tiers

Shopify provides five distinct pricing tiers for Australian businesses. Here’s a detailed breakdown:

Shopify Pricing 2025

***Hidden costs and additional fees***

The base subscription isn’t your only expense. Here are other costs you should think over:

Payment Processing Fees:

  • Basic Plan: 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction

  • Shopify Plan: 2.6% + 30¢ per transaction

  • Advanced Plan: 2.4% + 30¢ per transaction

App Expenses: Premium apps can add substantial monthly costs though many apps come free.

Theme Investment: Premium themes cost between AUD 150 to AUD 350 as a one-time purchase.

Annual vs monthly pricing comparison

Annual Pricing 2025

You can save 25% on your Shopify subscription with annual billing. Here’s what this means:

  • The Basic plan costs AUD 504 annually instead of AUD 672 with monthly billing. This saves you AUD 168 each year.

  • The Shopify plan costs AUD 1,341 annually instead of AUD 1,788 with monthly billing, saving AUD 447 per year.

  • The Advanced plan costs AUD 5,175 annually instead of AUD 6,900 with monthly billing, saving AUD 1,725 per year.

Higher-tier plans offer even bigger savings, making annual billing an attractive option for businesses.

Shopify Payments users can avoid extra transaction fees completely, whatever their billing cycle.

This leads to substantial savings, especially for high-volume stores.

Analysing Your Business Requirements

The right Shopify plan selection for our Australian business needs a careful analysis of our requirements. This is a vital step in our business strategy.

Let’s see how we can make this decision work best.

Key metrics to think about before choosing a plan

Your business metrics are the foundations of selecting the right Shopify plan. These metrics deserve your attention:

  • Average Order Value (AOV): Shows transaction fee effects

  • Customer Lifetime Value (CLV): Shows if higher-tier plans are worth it

  • Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC): Shapes marketing budget decisions

  • Return Customer Rate: Points to advanced customer feature needs

  • Shopping Cart Abandonment Rate: Reveals checkout optimisation needs

Transaction volume assessment

Transaction volume plays a significant role in picking the most affordable Shopify plan. Australian businesses should look at both current and future sales volumes.

Monthly sales patterns tell an important story.

Businesses processing more than 50 orders monthly often find that upgrading from the Basic plan pays off through lower transaction fees.

To name just one example, a move from Basic to Shopify plan saves 0.3% per transaction – the savings add up quickly for high-volume stores.

Growth projection analysis

A complete growth projection analysis looks at several key factors. Internal and external growth indicators paint the full picture:

Internal Growth Factors:

  • Planned marketing budget increases

  • New product launches

  • Upcoming sales campaigns

  • Brand partnerships

External Growth Factors:

  • Market trends

  • Seasonal fluctuations

  • Competitive landscape changes

The ideal plan should handle at least 12 months of projected growth. Rapid expansion plans might make the Shopify or Advanced plan a smart choice from day one. These plans offer strong features and lower transaction fees that become more valuable as your business grows.

Note that plan upgrades are always possible later. The right features should be in place before rapid growth happens to avoid operational issues. Performance problems, missing essential features, or steady sales increases usually signal the need for a higher-tier plan.

Calculating Total Cost of Ownership

The total cost of ownership (TCO) for our Shopify store involves more than monthly subscription fees. Our data analysis will help you make smart decisions about your e-commerce investment in Australia.

Transaction fees affect

Our analysis shows transaction fees eat up 1.3% to 3.5% of total purchase amounts. These fees change based on our chosen plan:

Plan Type

Shopify Payments Rate

Third-Party Payment Rate

Basic

2.9% + 30¢

+2.0%

Shopify

2.6% + 30¢

+1.0%

Advanced

2.4% + 30¢

+0.5%

These fees multiply with sales volume. To cite an instance, processing AUD 50,000 monthly in sales with a 0.3% difference in transaction fees can save you AUD 150 each month.

Payment gateway choices

Our payment gateway choice affects our profits directly. Shopify Payments eliminates additional transaction fees completely. Using third-party payment service providers (PSPs) requires us to think about:

  • Settlement timeframes (typically 2 business days in Australia)

  • Integration capabilities with existing systems

  • Additional platform fees (0.5% for Advanced, 0.15% for Plus)

Shopify Payments rates might exceed some PSPs, but removing additional platform fees makes it the affordable choice for Australian merchants.

Add-on and app expenses

App ecosystem costs need careful evaluation. They come in several forms:

  • Subscription Charges: Regular Shopify bills include these recurring costs that range from a few dollars to hundreds per month, depending on app selection.

  • Usage-Based Charges: App usage determines these variable costs, such as customer service interactions or marketing campaign volumes.

  • One-Time Purchases: Data migration or special features fall into this category that needs a single payment.

Setting app spending limits and regular usage audits helps optimise TCO. Many merchants overlook these costs that can reach 15-20% of their total platform expenses.

Research shows Shopify’s TCO is 33% lower than competing platforms. Australian businesses benefit from lower platform fees, reduced operational costs, and faster implementation processes.

Comparing Features Across Plans

We’ve really looked at the features of all Shopify plans in Australia, and we’re excited to share our detailed comparison that helps you make an informed choice.

Selecting the right Shopify plan for our Australian business depends on several key factors. Transaction volumes, hidden costs, growth projections, and feature requirements all play crucial roles. Successful merchants look beyond the monthly subscription fees. They evaluate the total cost of ownership, which includes payment processing fees, app expenses, and potential scaling needs.

A smart plan selection begins with a clear picture of current business metrics and future growth plans. The Basic plan suits new stores that process under 33 monthly transactions. Businesses that handle over 374 transactions can benefit from the Advanced plan’s lower fees and improved features. Your business’s key performance indicators will signal the right time to upgrade.

Your store’s ROI improves significantly when you use your chosen plan’s features fully. Merchants who set up detailed monitoring systems and use built-in tools like ShopifyQL Notebooks see a 35% boost in store performance within three months. Your store’s metrics need regular review to adjust strategies based on actual data. This approach ensures your e-commerce platform supports your business’s growth effectively.

How To Build A Website https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/blog/how-to-build-a-website/ Fri, 17 May 2024 06:00:00 +0000 https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/?p=20723

Building A New Website?... Follow our step-by-step guide...

We have put together a beginner’s guide to making your own website – this is outlined in an easy step-by-step format for you to follow along at your own pace. Whether you have worked on websites before, or are completely new and have no past experience, this will guide you along the way.

Some common questions people that stop people from building a website;

Do I need to know how to code?

No.

As I mentioned this is designed for beginners… so no matter your experience, at the end of this guide you’ll have a live functioning website to show.

Will I make a mistake or “mess things up”?

While yes, there is a lot of intricacies in any website process – if you follow this guide step by step, you’ll be fine.

I will be sure to mention any areas that you should avoid or hire a developer to assist with down the track.

Will it cost me a lot of money?

The benefit of being able to self-develop a website is the savings.
Aside from hosting fees, which shouldn’t cost more than 10-20$ AUD per month…
you’ll have no other outgoings.

So, with that covered… let’s get building your new website!

Step 1: Choose a domain name (.www)

The first step for every website is to ensure you have a domain that your website can be accessed (www.example.com)…

This is quite straightforward, and we have a few rules you can stick to to make the right choice for your business.

Business Websites: Your domain should be as close to your company name as possible or an “exact match” for consistency.
Example: Digital Nomads HQ, Our Domain Digitalnomadshq.com.au

Personal Websites: Use your name for a personal blog or personal branding (unless you have a personal brand name)

.com vs .com.au: If you are an Australian business, targeting the Australian market get either the .com.au or (new) .au domain. For a more detailed explanation of why read this; .com vs .com.au

Where do you buy a domain?

Simple: https://domains.squarespace.com/ – This was previously Google Domains.

An easy platform to buy your domains and check if a domain is available.

How much does a domain cost?

Both .com.au and .au domains are (A$27/yr)

Step 2: Hosting your website (Web Hosting)

Now you have your domain sorted… we need to sort website hosting.

Hosting is the server to which your website will be stored online…

Now there are many web hosting services, that will include both hosting and the ability to build your website also – Wix, and Squarespace are examples of this.

Leveraging platforms like these can be the “simple”, or “easy” option… but note, that they come with there own limitations. So to maximise flexibility, SEO & long-term success we will use globally the largest web platform (CMS) WordPress in this guide.

Organic positions within search display a strong correlation to the more links/authority a website has… the higher it ranks.

Finding a web hosting provider

With 100s of web hosting providers online… just search “web hosting” in Google and strap in.

We have grabbed one of our favourite for the ease of use, price & performance – so you don’t have to go searching.

Dreamhost Hosting

(Not sponsored) Dreamhost has a fantastic $4.95p/m (USD) WordPress starter hosting plan. This will include your SSL certificate, and great performance and they will even install WordPress onto the server for you… saving your time! Get started here – https://www.dreamhost.com/wordpress/shared-wp-hosting/ Click “Get Started”
Dreamhost website

Select Your Term (Monthy, 1 Year or 3 Years)

It will prompt you on whether you have a domain already, as we have already purchased your domain you can select “I already have a domain”, to which you will be prompted to input your new domain name.

Upon completion of this step-by-step – Dreamhost will assist you through some key areas;

• It will create an environment

• Talk you through the connection of your domain to the hosting environment

• Install an SSL (for security)

• And install WordPress for you.

These are all very simple step-by-step process with which the platform will assist you, and if you get stuck at any time you can use their 24/7 live support.

This is your Domain, Hosting and Website setup complete.

Step 3: Designing your website

Now we have you set up with your WordPress website, you can log in through your Dreampress dashboard or at yourdomain.com/wp-admin with your login credentials.

WordPress

This is your dashboard for WordPress.

Wordpress Dashboard
The left-hand side menu is where you assess each part of your website and can perform different functions… i.e. add pages, add posts (blogs), add imagery etc. By default, WordPress leverages a default Twenty Twenty-Four theme which is built using a platform called “Gutenberg”. But here we recommend a fast and optimized IT WordPress Theme.
Now in this guide, we are going to take it one step further and add a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) builder called Elementor… Why? Elementor is a fast, and very user friendly builder to give you better design functionality – so why wouldn’t you?

Step 1:

Installing Elementor

Click Plugins on the side menu

“Add new plugin” in the drop down.

In the top left corner search “Elementor”

And select “Install Now”

Once installed select “Active”

Ok, so that’s Elementor Installed…

Themes

We want to ensure the default “Hello Elementor” Theme is also active.

You do this by selecting on the side menu “Appearance” – “Themes”

Change Theme

And “active” Hello Elementor.

Once complete, it should look like this.

Site Appearance and WordPress Settings

Let’s keep moving through this!

So, with both Elementor installed and default themes now set… we can start tailoring your website to your business, brand and desired goals.

Let’s start by fixing up the site name, favicon and site logo. Again, on the left-hand side menu select “Appearance” – “Customise”.

This will display a page that will look as such;

The left menu will allow you to change the site identity – this includes;

Your logo, Site title, tagline and site icon (favicon)… this will be displayed in the browser for users.

Go through and complete these fields.

Here’s my example, so you can see how it should look.

Once you have completed these, click “Publish”

Creating your homepage

With site logos done and your business name in… let’s create a homepage.

Select “Pages” – “New Page”

Name your page – Home

And click the blue “Edit with Elementor”.

Editing Homepage

This is where the fun starts, designing your Homepage.

Important to note: I’m trying to keep this short and not too “in-depth” in either the navigation design (design of the navigation menu) or include any advanced on-page design techniques… for that we will have an additional guide.

My goal is to give you the basics to which you can then learn and experiment yourself.

So, with that being said – your page will look like this to start with;

Blank Homepage Example

The left-hand menu is your “widgets”

Widgets are pre-configured blocks, or designed elements to add to your page (without the need for custom code).

By simply dragging and dropping these blocks into your page you can start building out a design that works for you.

Here’s a short video showing the drag and drop, adjusting the sizing of images, and colours of fonts.

By default, Elementor gives you 25+ widgets from headings, text editors etc.. to more advanced, Google Maps embeds, Image carousels and progress bars.

Experiment with what widgets best work for what information you are trying to convey to your customer – don’t use widgets for the sake of using them.

Once you are complete with your page design, select publish.

Publishing a page

What you should include in your website homepage design

Headline

The rule is “within 3 seconds” – your website needs to tell visitors what you are about, our what the business is offering. So take time on your copy and especially the homepage primary title tag.

Expert Tip – This title tag should be a H1 tag for optimal SEO performance

Sub-Headings

These are supplements to the headline – offering brief descriptions of what you offer.

Primary CTAs (Calls-to-Action)

Visually striking buttons and CTA’s (ideally in a colour that contrasts with your homepage colour scheme, yet stays “on brand”).

Imagery

Make sure to include photos!
Even better if they are your own photos displaying people within your business or the products that you sell. High quality imagery is a must…

Now with your Homepage complete – let’s set it as the “homepage” for the website structure.

This ensures when someone visits your website, they will be sent to your new “homepage” as the landing page to which they then can navigate from.

How to set the Homepage on wordpress?

In the WordPress dashboard

Under “Appearance” select “Customise”

There is a tab called “Home page settings”.

Select “Static Page” and select your “Homepage”.

And Publish.

Creating more pages

Now you have created a homepage, you can start by adding a complete structure and additional pages that are important to websites.

These common pages are;

• Homepage
• About
• Contact Page
• Our Services / Product
• Blog
• Gallery / Our Work
• Testimonials or Reviews Page

Make sure to take the time and brainstorm which pages your business needs in order of priority and back.

These pages you can add to your navigation menu.

How to add pages to your menu in WordPress?

With your new pages being added to your website, we need to ensure that users can navigate to each of these pages seamlessly… in comes your navigation menu.

The list of pages at the top of almost every website, allows users to click between your primary pages.

Let’s get this working on your website;

In the WordPress dashboard;

Click “Appearance” – “Menu”

Give the menu a name and select “Create menu”

You can then add pages to your menu, whether this is posts or your primary pages that you have just created.

Adding Pages to your navigation

Ok… so, quick recap…

By now you will have a domain purchased, hosting setup, WordPress installed, logo & favicon installed, homepage and sub-pages created with a navigation across your website!

See, not so hard…

Now let’s ensure your website can be found by search engines…

Getting your website seen by search engines

With your site complete, we need to make sure Google is aware of it… and there’s a process to do this.

There are two parts to this process;

Creating a sitemap

Submitting your sitemap to Google.

Let’s start by creating your sitemap…

Adding a sitemap to your website (with Rankmath)

WordPress is fantastic for its library of plugins and this is another example (like Elementor) … we will add a tool called Rankmath.

The same way in which we added Elementor to your website, we will search for “Rankmath”, Install and activate.

Rankmath SEO Plugin

Upon this being installed follow the prompts setup by step, selecting the “Easy” setup option.

Sitemap done.

Now there is a lot of additional benefits of Rankmath (aside from just the sitemap) for SEO and by utilising this tool as you create new pages, it can assist you in analysing your content and providing recommendations to increase your search engine performance.

Let’s submit your sitemap to Google!

You can do this manually, but again we will use another plugin, one developed by Google themselves called site kit.

This handy tool will not only assist you in submitting your sitemap to Google (so it knows your website is live) but also assist you in setting up Google Analytics.

Google Analytics will give you live data on website visitors, by country, source, and how users are engaging with your website… so you can make changes to better their experience.

Site kit Sign in and setup

Follow the prompts “sign in with Google” and setup both Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

Search Console & Analytics

Final thoughts

Remember…. your website is an asset to your business or company, so don’t leave it stale.

Update content frequently, add new pages as you add new services or products to your business and rotate imagery with up-to-date pictures of the team of new packaging on products…

How Often Should You Redesign Your Website https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/blog/how-often-should-you-redesign-your-website/ Mon, 06 Nov 2023 00:00:00 +0000 https://digitalnomadshq.com.au/?p=9587

While there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, it is generally recommended to redesign your website every 2-3 years. This timeframe allows you to stay up-to-date with the latest design trends, technologies, and user expectations.

However, it is important to note that the decision to redesign should not be solely based on time. Instead, you should consider other factors such as:

  • Changes in your business goals
  • Changes in your branding such as logos, content, colours etc.
  • Changes in your target audience
  • Changes in industry trends

Similarly, completely redesigning your website too often can be counterproductive. Frequent changes can confuse your audience and create a sense of instability. That is why striking the right balance between consistency and evolution is key to a successful website redesign strategy!

"Your website can be the point of difference in a successful lead generation online... Why would you ignore it?"

Mitch McAuliffe, Web Developer at Digital Nomads HQ

Benefits of redesigning a website

More often than not, your website is the primary platform of contact for potential customers, clients, and users. To ensure your website remains effective and competitive, a periodic website redesign is not just a good idea – they’re essential to ensure you remain up-to-date and competitive within your niche.

  1. Keep Up with Changing Trends: Design trends, user expectations, and technology constantly change. What was cutting-edge a few years ago might be outdated today. Redesigning your website ensures it aligns with current design standards and provides a fresh, modern look that appeals to your audience.
  2. Mobile Responsiveness Matters: With the majority of internet traffic coming from mobile devices, having a mobile-responsive website is a necessity. A website that adapts to various screen sizes not only offers a better user experience but also ranks higher in search engine results
  3. Enhance Search Engine Visibility: Search engines like Google reward websites that provide excellent user experiences. Redesigning your website with web design and SEO best practices in mind can lead to improved search engine rankings, ultimately driving more organic traffic to your site.
  4. Update Content and Information: A redesign is an ideal opportunity to refresh your content, ensuring its accuracy and relevance.
  5. Rebrand or Realign with Your Brand’s Evolution: A website redesign allows you to realign your website with your brand’s current identity.
  6. Remain Competitive: To remain competitive in the digital marketplace, your website needs to stand out. Regularly redesigning your site helps you keep pace with competitors who are also evolving and improving their online presence.
  7. Performance Optimization: A website redesign can focus on optimizing the performance of your website, ensuring it runs smoothly and without disruptions.
  8. Adapt to New Technologies: As new technologies emerge, your website should be ready to embrace them and a redesign allows you to adapt to the ever-changing tech landscape!
  9.

If your website is experiencing performance issues, has a high bounce rate, or is not generating the desired conversions, these are clear indications that a website redesign is needed.

Additionally, if your competitors have recently revamped their websites and are gaining a competitive edge, it may be time for you to do the same. Regularly monitoring your website analytics and keeping a pulse on industry trends will help you determine the optimal time for a website redesign.

Top 7 signs that your website needs a redesign

It goes without saying that even the most well-established businesses and websites need a facelift. While it may not always be obvious, there are some common factors you can consider when looking at revamping your online presence.

Here are the top seven signs that your website may be due for a redesign:

1. It Looks and Feels Dated

One of the most easy-to-spot and obvious ways to determine if your site needs a facelift is to simply give it a once-over. First impressions are crucial, and if your website looks like it’s been plucked from a bygone era, it may be time for a change.

An outdated design can be a major turn-off for visitors and may convey the impression that your business or brand is out of touch with the current trends and technologies.

Some outdated elements to look out for include:

  • Cluttered and crowded layouts
  • Unoptimised, pixelated images
  • Broken links and images
  • Complicated navigation menus and a lack of clear, user-friendly pathways

Credibility and authority are crucial when it comes to the success of your website. If your website is outdated and unoptimised, users may question the accuracy and relevance of the information you provide, which can ultimately deter them from engaging with your content or taking desired actions.

On the other hand, A fresh, modern look is essential to capture the attention of your target audience and keep them engaged. Redesigning your website to reflect contemporary design standards can breathe new life into your online presence and ensure that your visitors perceive your brand as current, credible, and trustworthy.

2. Inconsistencies in Branding

Your website should be a seamless extension of your brand identity. Consistency is key when it comes to building trust and brand recognition. If there are inconsistencies in your logos, colour schemes, fonts, and overall branding, it can confuse visitors as well as create a disjointed and unprofessional image for your audience!

A website redesign can harmonise your branding elements for a more professional and unified appearance. This consistency not only instils a sense of reliability and professionalism but also makes it easier for your audience to recognise and connect with your brand across various touchpoints.>

74% of online users will return to a website that is mobile-friendly As of August 2023, 55.5% percent of all web traffic came through mobile phones

3. Not Mobile Friendly

Users today expect the same seamless, user-friendly experience as those on desktops. With the majority of web traffic coming from mobile devices, having a mobile-friendly website is a must.

If your site is not responsive to various screen sizes and doesn’t adapt to mobile interfaces, you are ultimately alienating a significant portion of your audience and risk driving away potential customers and users.

Moreover, search engines like Google prioritise mobile-friendly websites in their rankings, which means that a lack of mobile optimisation can negatively impact your website’s visibility and search engine performance.

4. Difficult To Navigate & Poor User Experience

Many older websites suffer from overcomplicated and difficult-to-navigate websites. This often contributes to a poor user experience – If visitors find your website hard to navigate, they’re likely to leave in frustration!

A poor user experience can result from:

  • Complex Menus
  • Lack of Clear Pathways
  • Cluttered Layouts
  • Slow Loading Times

Redesigning your website is not just about making it look good, it’s about ensuring that it provides a seamless and satisfying user experience.

“Interactive experiences go beyond traditional marketing by actively involving the audience in the content. ”

5. Does Not Consistently Achieve Business Goals

Depending on the goals of your business and website, there are a number of strategies to assess what needs to be improved. This includes:

  • Goal Alignment
  • Audience-Centric Content
  • User Journey Mapping
  • Data Analytics
  • Feedback and Surveys

6. Your Website Is Unresponsive & Slow To Load

Many users today have a short attention span, which means that the longer your websites take to load, the more likely they are to leave in search of a competitor. Many older websites are at risk of being unresponsive and slow to load.

This is often the result of:

  • Outdated technology and plugins
  • Too many images
  • Unoptimised images
  • Bulky code

Not only is a website redesign beneficial for visual purposes but redesigning and updating your website can address performance issues, ensuring your site loads quickly and responds to user interactions seamlessly.

7. Outdated Content and Information

To remain a valuable resource for your audience and maintain your authority and credibility, it’s essential to keep your content fresh, informative, and up-to-date. Trust is a vital component of online success and a website with outdated can significantly undermine that trust.

Similarly, search engines like Google value fresh and relevant content. They prioritise websites that consistently provide updated information, which can positively impact your website’s search engine rankings and online visibility.
